Art is a place for children to learn to trust their ideas, themselves, and to explore what is possible.”

Intent

The intent of our Art curriculum is to:

  • Encourage children to develop a love and appreciation of Art and develop their confidence in the subject.
  • Equip all children with the knowledge and skills needed to become confident artists.
  • Provide ample opportunities for children to develop their artistic skills and creativity and explore a range of media and artistic techniques.
  • Provide opportunities for children to learn about, and be inspired by, the work of great artists and explore art from a range of different cultures.

RESPECT

Children learn to appreciate art and learn to be respectful when viewing each others’ artwork, as well as artwork from different artists, cultures and time periods. Children learn that art is subjective and learn how to critique the work of others, in a positive and respectful manner.

RESILIENCE

Children are encouraged to explore and experiment with a range of media, techniques and tools. These opportunities enable children to develop their confidence and application of skills. Children learn to evaluate and improve their artwork and take pride in their work.

INDEPENDENCE

Children will develop their independence in art through having frequent opportunities to explore and experiment with a range of media and techniques. They are encouraged to be creative, use their imagination and take ownership of their artwork.

RESPONSIBILITY

Children will develop their understanding and appreciation of art in our world. They learn to use tools and equipment sensibly and effectively, in a safe environment. Children take responsibility for their work and are encouraged to evaluate and improve their artwork.

FRIENDSHIP

Children have opportunities to work collaboratively, sharing creative ideas and opinions. They support each other and demonstrate kindness and consideration when sharing artwork.

Implementation

  • We follow the National Curriculum and Early Years Development Matters.
  • We follow a carefully planned whole school progression of knowledge and skills in Art.
  • Each project is based around a particular Art focus, to enable children to develop their knowledge and skills in many aspects of Art, including painting, drawing, printing, sculpture and crafts.
  • Projects follow a structure where children are introduced to key concepts and build up knowledge and skills over time, using a more comprehensive range of equipment and techniques as they progress through school.
  • We make meaningful links to other areas of the curriculum.
  • We encourage children to evaluate their artwork and the artwork of others, developing important values of respect, resilience and responsibility.

Impact

  • Children will be equipped with knowledge and skills in a range of aspects of Art, including painting, drawing, printing, sculpture and crafts.
  • Children will foster a love and appreciation of art from a range of artists, cultures and time periods.
  • Children will develop confidence in their own artistic ability and creativity.
  • Children will embed the values of respect, resilience and responsibility, through supportive feedback and thoughtful critique of each others’ work, including their own.
