“In primary schools, we want the subjects to put in place the key building blocks of healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online. This will sit alongside the essential understanding of how to be healthy.”
“These subjects represent a huge opportunity to help our children and young people develop. The knowledge and attributes gained will support their own, and others’ wellbeing and attainment and help young people to become successful and happy adults who make a meaningful contribution to society.”

Intent
At CWR School, we teach PSHE (personal, social, health, and economic education) as a whole-school approach to underpin children’s development as people and because we believe that this also supports their learning capacity.
The 1Decision programme supports PSHE, RSE, Health Education, SMSC Development, as well as Safeguarding. Mapped to the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study, 1Decision helps children learn the skills to manage different influences and pressures in their personal development.
We use the 1Decision Programme which offers a comprehensive, carefully thought-through Scheme of Work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area.
Here, at CWR School we value PSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning.

RESPECT
Children will learn how to have in-depth discussions of key PSHE topics through learning to listen to others and their differing opinions. They learn to consider different values and to respect the views of others. Children will develop an inclusive mindset, allowing them to respect themselves, be able to express their own personal values and opinion with those that they encounter.

RESILIENCE
The 1Decision programme builds resilience in children, equips them for life and underpins their capacity to learn. We believe emotional resilience can be taught, practised and developed. Children will learn to show real resilience and will understand that making mistakes is part of the learning process. They will develop the confidence to have another go, keep on trying and make good progress.

INDEPENDENCE
1Decision develops children’s personal, social and economic development as well as their health and well-being. This will enable them to become independent learners in educational settings. Children will also be equipped to go into the world with the skills to be independent and with an understanding of how to look after themselves, their health, relationships and wellbeing.

RESPONSIBILITY
Children will work together to create a safe, happy environment. Children will learn to take responsibility for their own learning and respect the rights of others to learn. Using 1Decision, children will develop an awareness of the shared learning environment and how to look after it. Children will develop the confidence to go into the world with an understanding of how to look after themselves and others in relation to relationships, health and mental health.

FRIENDSHIP
Children will be able to apply skills taught within 1Decision to nurture friendship. They will respect others, share and listen to others thoughts and opinions with an inclusive mindset. Children will support each other and create a playful environment in which everyone feels safe, happy and accepted.
Implementation
1decision is implemented across CwR from EYFS to Year 6 through a progressive, age-appropriate curriculum that supports PSHE. In Early Years, the programme introduces foundational skills like identifying emotions, making choices, and understanding personal safety through stories and interactive activities. As pupils progress through Key Stages 1 and 2, the content builds on these foundations, covering topics such as friendships, online safety, mental health, and decision-making. Teachers use a blend of videos, discussion prompts, and scenario-based learning to ensure consistency and continuity in PSHE education, helping children develop lifelong skills for well-being and resilience.
The 7 themes we cover include: Keeping/Staying Safe, Keeping/Staying Healthy, Growing & Changing/Relationships, Being Responsible, Feelings & Emotions, Computer Safety and The Working World/Our World. In KS2 they also cover A World Without Judgement and First Aid. KS1 cover Fire Safety.
Impact
The whole-school implementation of 1decision has a significant and positive impact on pupils’ personal development, emotional well-being, and social skills. Schools report improved behaviour, increased empathy, and greater emotional awareness among pupils. Children become more confident in expressing their feelings, making informed choices, and understanding the consequences of their actions. The consistent, age-appropriate approach across year groups ensures progression and reinforcement of key concepts, which supports better retention and application of learning. Additionally, pupils demonstrate a clearer understanding of how to stay safe, both online and offline, and show increased respect for themselves and others. The programme also helps schools meet statutory PSHE and safeguarding requirements effectively, contributing to a positive, inclusive school culture.
